Favela Metrô Mangueira after “Remocão branca”

Metrô da Mangueira (the little favela close to favela Mangueira and the grand stadion Maracanã) looks like a ghost town, after the prefeitura – the municipality of Rio – has made a forced removal in the favela, also called ”Remocão branca”. The removal was made in order to ”clean up” before the Olympic games and World Cup arrive in Rio and the big Maracanã stadion, and hence many houses have been destroyed and families have been forced to move from their homes.

Last year around 700 families lived in the favela. Now only around 300 families are left. Enandro, a owner of a small shop, has chosen to stay, even though his favela is being destroyed, and falling apart around him. But he is worried about the situation: ”I don’t know, when I will have to move from my house”. A house where he has lived for many years.

The president of Metrô-Mangueira is very unhappy  about the way the municipality is dealing with the removal, as citizens in Metrô-Mangueira hardly get any information from the authoriteis.

Today, March 25th,  there is a demonstration against the forced removals in Candelaria.
